A Clear Knowledge Of Clinical Depression Is Crucial

Major depressive disorder, (also known as clinical depression) is a common disorder which affects 1 in 10 people. We are all prone to it regardless of age, gender or where we live. Before we look into the symptoms of depression, we need to know what is depression. Basically, depression is a mental disorder which affects the way people think, how they feel. It also disturbs their energy levels and their attitude against themselves and other people. There are a lot of reasons as to why it affects people. For some, it may have been the breakdown of a relationship or there could have been monetary problems. A bereavement or even bullying could lead to the disorder for some. In other cases, they may have an inherent tendency towards it.

When we look at what's depression from a severity point of view, there are four main severity levels or kinds of depression: mild, moderate, severe and bipolar. With the mild type, the individual faces fatigue, indecision, lack of concentration, sleep disturbance and loss of confidence. Here it is to be noted that the person is not necessarily always in a depressed state.

In the moderate type, the person will have all the symptoms of the mild type but in addition will appear depressed to other individuals.

Severe depression not only shows all the symptoms as in the mild and moderate but also causes the affected individual to have suicidal tendencies. Individuals suffering from severe depression are extremely pessimistic about their self worth. They may even have hallucinations. Severe depression patients may also also experience delusions about being terminally ill. When both delusions and hallucinations exist, it is called psychotic depression.

Another kind of depression is the bipolar disorder. In this type, there are both the extremes. At certain periods the person is manic (full of energy) and at others depressive.

The following are the common depression symptoms:

1) Having low energy and feeling tired and fatigued.

2) Lack of concentration.

3) Waking up frequently at night.

4) Feeling miserable or bored.

5) Feeling of guilt.

6) Lack of interest in living.

7) Aches and pains which have no physical basis.

As with any other physical or mental health condition, the first step of treatment of any clinical depression case is to first understand what is clinical depression, and then being able to tell the important symptoms of the disorder. As soon as the early warning signs are acknowledged and a diagnosis is made, the treatment will generally provide positive outcomes.
