A Stressed Out High School Student Exhibits A Number Of Alcohol-Related Problems, Gets Removed From School, And Has To See The School Psychologist

Stephen was a sixteen year old high school sophomore who was manifesting numerous alcohol-related issues at school. Consequently, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be permitted to return to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school discharge to his Mom and Dad. His Mom and Dad were "fairly conventional" and explained to Stephen that dropping out of school was not a workable educational option. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would probably be like a lead weight around his legs that may mar his educational achievement for the remainder of his adult life. Moreover, Stephen's Mom and Dad were very disappointed that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his buddies in the second.

It was obvious that his Mother and Father were in total accord with Stephen's principal and explained to Stephen that he had better come to the understanding that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his conversation with his Mom and Dad, Stephen finally agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen called the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next morning before school.

When Stephen arrived at his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she at once analyzed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had experienced and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related behavior gave the school administrators room for alarm.

Quite frankly, Stephen was not sure why the principal suggested that he see a school counselor. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking behavior? Since almost all of his buddies drink as much if not more than he does, primarily, drinking is no big issue. Stated more explicitly, if almost everybody is drinking, why is this such a big thing?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to short-circuit his ability to behave like a responsible young man. As put into words by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your buddies drink hard liquor, beer, wine coolers, or wine does not mean that it's the best thing to do for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was very organized for her meeting with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had underlined that summarized various drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of information that applied chiefly to teenagers.

After Miss Pender articulated the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was plain to see that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a real surprise to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to put in plain words the short term and the long term effects of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, but she also took the time to validate what she was saying with alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that related to everybody in general, and principally to teens.

Indeed, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen promptly understood why he should not be engaging in excessive and abusive drinking with or without his pals any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the material she presented and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
