A Young Man Requires Therapy For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Drug Dependency And Alcoholism

Approximately three months ago I had lunch with a forty-one-year-old male named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship issues, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As declared by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship issues.

As affirmed by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship problems and by both of his medical conditions that he in actual fact has little or no aspiration to do much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete four semesters of grad school in sports history.

Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an illustration of an individual who can look in the mirror and see his drinking problems and substance abuse and do something constructive about these difficulties. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol dependency counseling that results in long-term recovery.

It may be asked how therapy would help his drug and alcohol dependency. For starters, there are more than a few recently produced physician-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to admit the fact that there is absolutely nothing helpful about drug addiction and abusive and unhealthy drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the map to financial difficulties, deteriorating health, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, a premature death, and legal problems. Fourth, therapy for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him cope with these psychological issues more successfully and help create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.

Because Benjamin lacks the resolve to carry out much of anything in his life, it is apparent that he urgently needs a little hope for a better life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he requires for his extreme depression and drug addiction and alcohol dependency and remain in his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is simply too young to be crushed in life. He doesn't realize this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from drugs and alcohol through alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the treatment he needs for his acute depression, he can reorient his life and start living with direction, self-respect, and passion.

More solid relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to seek the professional treatment he requires, follow through with his therapy protocol, live his life in a drug and alcohol-free and healthy manner, and learn how to foster a more positive attitude about his life.
