To say that my folks weren't thrilled when I made the decision to go to beauty school is an understatement. They were certainly ashamed. I was going to a good one, but they didn't care. The Aveda beauty school, you see, was not a prominent institution. My family had been attending Princeton University for about three decades now, and beauty schools were out of the question. They did not see cosmetology as a respectable field. Like many people, they assumed it was just something for high school drop-outs to do. What they didn't realize was that cosmetology schools were my passion. It was not just an easy job for me to get. It was something that I wanted to do for a career.

What troubled me most about the reaction they had to my beauty colleges decision was the rancor in their eyes. It more or less said to me that, if I went to beauty school, I would not be their son anymore. The bizarre thing is that they have supported me through thick and thin. Beauty colleges were inconceivable, but when I was expelled for getting in fights, they barely punished me at all. It was as if, as long as I was doing something that was considered respectable for men to do, I was ok. When I decided to go to beauty college, however, it was something different. They didn't say it out and out, but it was apparent that they had doubts about my lifestyle. I did not care. It was what I wanted to do, and it was what I was going to do.

It turns out that beauty college did not work out quite as I had thought. Do not misunderstand me - I loved the work. The issue was that it was not something that I could see myself doing for 10 or 20 years. I had an apprenticeship with a wedding photographer, and I loved going out on projects with the wedding photographer and doing make up for the brides. However, I couldn't see working for a wedding photographer until the end of time. I finished the beauty college that I was going to, got a job, and used that to pay my way through college. Beauty schools were just a temporary phase after all. Nonetheless, I'm happy that I made the determination that I did. If I hadn't tried out going to cosmetology schools, I never would have known if I was making my own decisions. I would not have been able to participate in college, because I would've assumed that I was only doing it because my parents wanted me to. By trying out beauty colleges, however, I was being my own man.
